As my firstborn is quickly approaching two, I am struck by the sheer magnitude that parenthood is. I feel like I have failed in so many ways!
Recently my little guy started counting to ten ON HIS OWN and it made me realize that I need to start challenging him. We need to start learning numbers, alphabet, colors, shapes, and so much more! This realization made me doubt myself and I started to feel that I had failed him because I hadn't made those things a focus yet. He has SO much to learn and I am the one that is responsible for teaching him.
This little boy will be a big boy before I know it and I MUST be working on shaping his heart to be loving and caring - especially as regards his sister (one day I'm sure he will stop pinching her fingers). This is an overwhelming thought to me! One day this little boy will get married and his care and attention to his wife will be largely dependent on how I train him. Oh boy - talk about pressure!
While my thoughts can and do lead me to these moments of feeling like a complete failure, I must also remember that God gave these two precious children to ME! He has entrusted them to my care (and my husband's). While I know there are always ways to be improving, I can rest in the knowledge that God knew what He is doing in choosing me to be their mother.
Adjusting to life with a 21 month old little boy and a newborn has its ups and downs. One second my toddler is sweetly sharing his toys with his newborn sister and the next he is pushing said toy into her mouth because he thinks she wants to chew on it like he does - little does he know that she has no idea how to do something so advanced as chew.
One minute he is holding her - with my arms around her as well of course - telling me how small her fingers are and pointing out her chin, cheeks, elbows, belly, and nose, and the next minute he is squeezing her fingers so tightly that she cries. One minute he is playing beautifully and she is happy as a lark watching him play and the next minute he is pulling my shirt asking to "hold you" desperately wanting my complete attention. It is crazy! Although the temptation to get angry at my little guy and scream "pull yourself together!!", I try to remember that his emotions are under a lot of stress. One person told me that it would be akin to the feeling of your husband telling you that he married a younger and prettier woman...but he still loves you. Wow! I can't even imagine!
So while I am still training and discipling my little guy to obey and play nicely, I also try to give more grace to the poor little guy. I'm so thankful that in general Gus is a very loving and sweet brother to Emmy but I was a little unprepared for all the melt-downs from him. I knew the transition would have its challenges, but I thought the challenges would be a bit different than this.
Here's to our new normal!
Our little girl has arrived and she is just as precious as can be! Her birth story is short and sweet which is much different than her brother's story - except for the sweet part.
I've been on the lookout for a dresser for the nursery for quite some time now - stopping in at goodwill every time I was running errands, looking down the sides of the road when I was driving somewhere, or popping in on garage sales. I wanted something that was sturdy that I could do some refinish or paint and after sometime of searching, I found exactly what I was looking for
Have you ever heard of a capsule wardrobe? Well the idea has been plauging me for some time and yet did nothing. I continued every morning getting dressed and then an hour or two later changing my mind and getting dressed again. Sometimes this happened 3 or 4 times. Well...enough was enough! It was time to to embark on a new venture - the capsule wardrobe venture.
I emptied my closet of all the clothes, shoes, scarfs, skirts, dresses, and jeans. The pile on the bed was enormous!
She never thought anything would come of her trip down to Nashville. Brit's purpose in going to Nashville was to see a Blackhawks game, but while there she met someone and never was the same again.
You see, it happened like this. Brit saw CJ's profile on on the Tinder app and decided to swipe right. Later that day Brit and her friend went to the bar later and met CJ in person. Even though they both didn't have much expectation going into it, they had a wonderful time!
They continued getting to know each other long distance. Then one day when Brit went down to see CJ, he left work early and began their time together by treating Brit to all of her favorite things. It started with a Vanilla Cappuccino from Starbucks, some Wine at Arrington Winery and then out to dinner on a rooftop. They ended the day by walking on the Pedestrian Bridge and when they reached the center CJ dropped down on one knee and asked a question that changed their lives forever!
Phil + Laura
Phil and Laura's love story began on a missions trip. They both are a part of the same church denomination (which is actually how I know them!) and every year in Wisconsin there is a missions trip to a Native American Reservation. This week long trip is spent working a Vacation Bible School at the two reservations there. They formed a strong friendship while there...but they were just friends.
Then in 2015, before Phil left for boot camp, Laura came up to Wheaton from Springfield to come to what she thought was a "going away party" for him. However, it lead to what they later called their first date. While Phil was at boot camp Laura wrote him letters and when he finally graduated, they were reunited and Phil didn't waste any time in asking Laura to be his.
"[Our] relationship has been unconventional. It has been fast. It is unexpected. But it is built on years of solid friendship and a desire to serve the Lord better together." ~ Laura Troxel
I was honored to be able to capture their wedding and witness their covenant of marriage before God. It was an absolutely gorgeous day!!
Marielle + Eryk
At the beginning of the year I took Marielle and Eryk's engagement session (you can view it here) and I couldn't wait for their wedding! Marielle got ready for the big day in the house she grew up in with her family all around her and it was the sweetest thing ever! When she was ready, her dad drove her around the corner to the church.
It was a gorgeous day! The light was gracefully pouring in through the windows which made the inside of the church absolutely beautiful!
Their reception was at Mission Hills Country Club and the grounds there were stunning for portraits - I was loving it!
Fred + Katie
Fred and Katie are truly a joy to be around. I think the best man had is right when he said they bring out the joy in each other. When I was working with them for their engagement shoot, they were so positive to be around - even though I had them trudging through wet grass to get a shot I had in my head.
The day of their wedding was absolutely perfect! The sun was out and a nice breeze made it so the outdoor wedding was comfortable for all those in attendance. One of my favorite moments of the ceremony was watching the little flower girl get up off her Grandpa's lap and twirl and explore in the sand right in front of Fred and Katie! It was great!
After the pastor announced them as husband and wife, seeing Katie's beautiful smile when she looked at Fred and their joy as they exited was amazing!
I was so excited for this weekend of the Brennan wedding to finally arrive. After meeting Charles and Stephanie at church one random weekend and then for their engagement shoot, I was blown away by their sweet disposition and caring nature. This held true even on an extremely stressful day - their wedding! I was constantly asked if there was anything more they could do for me and since they had already thought of everything my answer was always "no, I'm good".
The time for the ceremony finally arrived and you could tell both Charles and Stephanie were ready for things to get rolling! It was a wonderful service and in the end....it worked!! They're married! Many blessings to you both!
Read a little more of their story and see there engagement pictures here.
